Lack of Motivation or Direction

Obviously, success is not usually deliverable when there is a lack of motivation or direction. It is usually linked with fear or safety (what will happen to my self-esteem if I don't make it?) and these unconscious drivers change our behaviour. Also, there's a lot of conditioning about not acting when uncertain, which helps reinforce our unconscious messages. So, how do you become certain - or is it easier to put it off until you are totally, 100% convinced?

How many times have you made a plan, got really enthusiastic about it and found that, instead of doing what is needed to get where you want to go in the time you want, you're spending hours playing computer games, or pottering around the house or surfing the net for the best price of a product you can't afford to buy or don't really want? Sound familiar?

The question is 'what is the worst that can happen if you finish?' No more excuses. Time to deliver. Time to be judged.Scary, eh?

STOP!

You're not defined by the plans that fail - you're defined by the ones that succeed and you won't have that definition unless you complete your plans. There is no failure - only feedback! Also, (sorry - more maxims) if you fail to plan, you're planning to fail.

I have missed more than 9,000 shots, lost almost 300 games, on 26 occasions been entrusted to take the game-winning shot...and missed. I have failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeeded. Michael Jordan

One thing is for certain - if you don't complete your plans you'll never know if they would have worked!
Here are some tips for staying on course.

  1. Be clear on why it is a must! Positive reasons are best (I want to be successful so that I can have a great quality of life rather than so I won't be poor) although negatives (away froms) can motivate. Search your heart here. What language really motivates you? Why is it a must!
  2. Run the PAW model over it. Is it Possible? Have I the Ability? Am I Worth it (Do I deserve it?). Be clear on the worthy part. If you don't think you deserve to be happy - it won't happen.
  3. Expect to be scared - then do it anyway. Everyone's scared - they either use it or are made inert by it. Which are you? If you are stopped by an unrealised fear, you are paying it far too much respect and it wins.
  4. Plan, plan and then get someone to check your plans. Draw a time line with your ultimate goal at the end and work it backwards. I.e. what will you have to have done by next week to, say, have your song recorded by x (time). Get a coach if you need to.
  5. Act! You won't get what you want if you don't get rolling.
