John Sammers' Success Tip #4
Hi again! This week, in the last of this particular series I will share with you an effective way to improve our skills and/or behaviour using a technique called The New Behaviour Generator
If you're in a rush scroll down to the summary.
You may or may not be aware that when we process information we search through our banks of knowledge and when doing this we unconsciously use our eyes to carry out this search. These are called Eye Accessing Cues. Ask your friend any question where they have to think and watch their eyes move. We can use this phenomenom to improve skills and behaviour.
Keep your head facing forward for this exercise and just move your eyes.
Look down to your left and say (in your head) what skill or behaviour you'd like to have.
Be specific. For example "I want to sink longer putts", or, "be comfortable when talking to my boss" or "play faster guitar with precision". Elaborate if you need to. Perhaps to be more resourceful with finance. How would you look, sound and behave if you had this skill.
Now look up to the right (keeping your head still).
You now need to construct a movie of yourself carrying out this skill or behaviour in all the situations where it is important, meaningful or neccessary. Include every possible circumstance and include the sounds you'll hear.
If you are having difficulty then close your eyes but continue to look up to the right. If you are still having difficulty seeing yourself doing what you want then see a person you know who has this skill or behaviour. Edit the movie as if you are a film director of a home movie. Make it a bit bigger and brighter
When you have the movie as you'd like it - step into yourself (or the person) and see a repeat but this time looking through your own eyes rather than seeing yourself. Run it all the way (every possible situation you would use it)
Now look down to the right
This is where you check in with your feelings. How do you feel? Are you happy - feeling warm and confident? Or a bit uncertain and hesitant. If it's the former, then your unconscious mind has fully accepted that this is you and you can confidently expect an immediate improvement in this area. It will help to regularly run it prior to the situations it is aimed at until you have a neural net of success. If it's the latter, then some area in your life has been missed or something that needs to be done first (think of last week's tip) hasn't been considered. Ask yourself what is missing? Many people forget to include close loved-ones and it is vital that those closest to you accept and recognise the new you.
So, what is it? Do you not believe you can have/do/be it?
Start the cycle again to solve the issue of what's still missing
You might have worked out, for example, that to be a whizz with money you'll need some financial knowledge. Possibly the skill you'll need is to speed up your reading and improve your retention of information so that you can absorb the information you'll need. Get that skill by going through the same procedure.
If you don't believe that you can have it, look at your beliefs. Why can't you be charming and lighthearted with the opposite sex? Why can't you speed up your reaction times to be a better driver? What's stopping you from speaking to a room full of peers on a subject you know well?
Enjoy it!
I have to remind you again - you have more power than you realise and your unconscious mind has quite a simple system. If it believes what it sees it will alter your conscious behaviour to match what it believes to be so.
Summary
1) Identify what behaviour or skill you'd like and, looking down (using your eyes only) to your left and tell yourself clearly what skill or behaviour you intend to possess.
2) Looking up to the right, edit a compelling movie of yourself or someone else demonstrating this skill or behaviour successfully employed. What will you notice and what will you feel?
3) When the movie is big and bright and looking good step into yourself (or whoever) and experience what its like to do/have this skill. Run the movie again.
4) Look down to the right and feel whether all is good and you are confident that you can do it.
5) If not, define what it is that you think is missing and run the process again, this time acquiring the missing skill.
Next week we will learn a great way to solve problems!
Best,
John Sammers
