John Sammers' Success Tip #6

Getting Organised

Firstly, apologies to everyone for taking so much time with this latest offering. There has been a bit of re-organisation and it was a busy summer of gigs. The Rock n Roll Coach is now at www.rocknrollcoach.com John Sammers.com will be my own music site. So, on with the tip!

Hello everyone - this week we are looking at getting organised. There are NLP techniques that can be used if this practical system fails which will be in the next newsletter. Please forward this tip to anyone who may be interested in receiving it. As I said, from now on, I am going to be spending much more energy dealing with the problems musicians face such as confidence, money and addictions. Please pass this on to anyone who you feel will benefit from some assistance in these areas. I'm also going to be using EFT a lot more. If you'd like more info go to www.emofree.com
If you're in a rush scroll down to the summary.

When we are mad keen to finish demos, work on our website, write lyrics, we have to consider the rest of life or things can get a bit out of kilter.
The sooner we can write letters, pay bills, DO OUR MARKETING, the sooner we can get on with our creative side.

Get a System

There are a few different systems about and you have to find the one that fits with the way you operate to have lasting success. The important factor is to do the 'too hard' jobs first.

When we put the too hard jobs last its a bit like saying to your parents you're leaving the disliked vegetable until last only to find by then you're too full to eat them! It becomes more difficult to complete challenging tasks when you're tired - and this get's you stressed so you put them off for another day. Disaster! A new opportunity to beat yourself up for being disorganised. Truth is, if you get them done first you can relax and start gathering your energy for the people and things that matter most. Work is just work.
In order to achieve this we need to first reframe our representation of the bad experience and then organise ourselves so that we can spend more energy on the more important things. We can do this in a number of ways. One is to examine what your belief is. What is so bad about doing books - or cold calling venues etc? It's your business. It should be a pleasure to know that by doing your books you will not only ease stress, eliminate a reason to criticise yourself and get a sense of achievement, you will also improve your relationship with your loved ones (more energy) and with money. They say if you look after money like a favourite pet, it will always come to you . That wasn't a telling you off - it was an example of the fact that failure to complete tasks you assign yourself, that are important, has some negative emotional impact and completing them has positive one.

So how do I get motivated to do the tasks I dislike?

Trick yourself! You've hopefully got yourself feeling better about these tasks. Some strategies for achieving our goals would come in handy here. Follow the system and forget about your old beliefs. Try it! Here is a system that divides all your tasks in an order of priority. All you need do is, before you go to bed or as soon as you get up (before bed seems more restful), write your list of tasks and give them the letters A, B, C, or D and follow this sytem.

A
Important and Urgent Do first
B
Important but Not Urgent Do next
C
Urgent but Not Important Delegate
D
Neither Urgent nor Important Ditch

Delegating is up to your circumstances, support network and charm.

When planning the day build in breaks with rewards.

Its a bit grim wading through s****y tasks without anything more than a buzz as a reward. So, build rewards in. What's wrong with, 'as soon as I finish the bathroom sealing I can have a beer, or play some music, or whatever.'
Also, make sure that when doing your list you group together similar tasks. For example writing letters, short trips in the car. (Thinking a couple of days in advance is a help here because you can perhaps get a few of these done while you're out).

Add the 3Ds to the
system.

Deal, Ditch or Delegate! Its a very good way to become ruthless with your time - as you should be. Also, try to not touch a piece of paper twice (if you do a lot of paper work).

Sure, all of this takes a bit of self-discipline but you will find it gets easier as you get into the habit of it and habits are formed by repitition. So try giving it a go for a couple of months and see how it feels! Use the New Behaviour Generator to help you - next I will tell you about swish patterns that can help as well!

Summary

1) Reframe by asking yourself what is it about the task you dislike and decide whether its reasonable or rational
2) Write a list of tasks and assign them letters
3) Complete tasks in the order (unless grouping similar tasks).
4) Build in rewards
5) Keep it up for a couple of months
